چکیده

While color video endoscopy has enabled wide-field examination of the gastrointestinal tract, it often misses or incorrectly classifies lesions. Many of these missed lesions exhibit characteristic three-dimensional surface topographies. An endoscopic system that adds topographical measurements to conventional color imagery could therefore increase lesion detection and improve classification accuracy. We introduce photometric stereo endoscopy (PSE), a technique which allows high spatial frequency components of surface topography to be acquired simultaneously with conventional two-dimensional color imagery. We implement this technique in an endoscopic form factor and demonstrate that it can acquire the topography of small features with complex geometries and heterogeneous optical properties. PSE imaging of ex vivo human gastrointestinal tissue shows that surface topography measurements enable differentiation of abnormal shapes from surrounding normal tissue. Together, these results confirm that the topographical measurements can be obtained with relatively simple hardware in an endoscopic form factor, and suggest the potential of PSE to improve lesion detection and classification in gastrointestinal imaging.

System for Clinical Photometric Stereo Endoscopy

Photometric stereo endoscopy is a technique that captures information about the high-spatial-frequency topography of the field of view simultaneously with a conventional color image. Here we describe a system that will enable photometric stereo endoscopy to be clinically evaluated in the large intestine of human patients. The clinical photometric stereo endoscopy system consists of a commercial...

Uncalibrated Near-Light Photometric Stereo

Photometric stereo (PS) [3] is a technique to accurately recover the normal map of a 3D scene from several pictures (at least three) taken from the same view point and under different illumination conditions. When the light directions and intensities are known, photometric stereo can be solved as a linear system. When the illumination is not known, one needs to solve a much harder problem: unca...

Feature Space Optimization for Virtual Chromoendoscopy Augmented by Topography

Optical colonoscopy is the preferred modality for the screening and prevention of colorectal cancer. Chromoendoscopy can increase lesion detection rate by highlighting tissue topography with a colored dye, but is too time-consuming to be adopted in routine colonoscopy screening. We developed a fast and dye-free technique that generates virtual chromoendoscopy images that incorporate topography ...

3D Reconstruction Using Shape from Photometric Stereo and Contours

In this work, we further discuss an approach to 3D shape recovery by combining photometric stereo and shape from contours methods. Surfaces recovered by photometric stereo are aligned, adjusted and merged according to a preliminary 3D model obtained by shape from contours. Comparisons are conducted to evaluate the performances of different methods. It has been found that the proposed combinatio...

Enhanced Photometric Stereo with Multispectral Images

We introduce a technique based on multispectral images aimed at improving Lambertian photometric stereo. Many photometric stereo algorithms assume Lambertian reflectance, but deviations from this ideal produce errors in shape reconstruction. To alleviate this problem, we exploit the wavelength-dependence of material reflectance. Based on the observation that reflectance at certain wavelengths f...
